Kratos also needs a shave (PS3)

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

I am a fan of razors, you all know that, but I’m also very interested by video games. Also, while reading my morning RSS, I’ve found this funny fake advert of Kratos, the hero of God of War on Playstation 3, having a shave! This has been done to illustrate a new deal Sony is trying to put in place to extract some more money from European wallets through a new deal inked with Target Entertainment, who will now be the consumer product licensing agent for all PlayStation software IP. So, you might see one day Kratos doing TV ads for Gillette Razors.

Safety Razor with an oscillating blade

Friday, March 20th, 2009

The oscillating razor is commun these days, but did you know it was invented 66 years ago? In 1933, an inventor created the first safety razor using an oscillating blade connected  to a pair of friction rollers which revolves and causes the whole blade to move sideward with a reciprocating motion, as indicated by arrows in the photograph (click on it to see it full size). The article says that the miniature mowing machine is declared to give an unusually close shave with a minimum of chafing and discomfort. Personnaly, I think that having a razor blade moving side to side against my skin sounds a litlle lethal.

[Especially designed for those with tender skins and tough beards, a new safety razor employs an oscillating blade to cut the hairs.]

Using the same principal, Gillette created a battery-powered rather than friction-powered razor, the Gillette Fusion Power Battery Powered Shaving System.

Invention of the first 5 blades safety razor

Invention of the first 5 blades safety razor

Invention of the first 5 blades safety razor

If you were thinking that Gillette would be the first to invent a five bladed razor, then let me tell you: They are 76 years too late, it was created in 1933! Indeed, the 5 blades are used in a new type of safety razor designed by a French inventor. It was advertised that a stroke of the razor across the face would remove every trace of hair in its path, based on the hysteresis effect. Also, speeding up the shaving, this razor did not need to be be taken apart after shaving, a simple rinsed under the faucet and screwed, head down in its dedicated case. The blades require no sharpening, according to the manufacturer, and will give good service indefinitely.

Gillette started manufacturing in 2006 the Gillette Fusion, which uses five blades and a lubricating strip on both the front and back.

Gillette 1909 Safety Razor advert

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

This is Gillette’s adverts day! God I love looking at these old adverts for Gillette Safety Razors. I’ve found another great one, from 1909, it’s a French advert which shows the Gillette razor as the King of the razors (Le sacre du roi des rasoirs). The advert underlines that the safety razor does not need sharpening, and that it’s a great gift which worthes a lot and doesn’t cost much. For the French learners, safety razor is translated by “rasoir de sureté“.

Early Gillette Advert for Safety Razor

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

This morning I wrote a post about an advert from Gillette staring a baby shaving, that I though was created in the 50s. I was wrong! I’ve been looking deeper in it, and I’ve found out that this ad was in fact created in the early 1900s !!! There is another copy of this great Gillette’s ad, this time in English, as you can see below:

French Gillette advert: First Shave

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

As always, I was browsing the web to find some interesting shaving trivia to share with my visitors. Today, I have found a great advert from Gillette showing a baby starting shaving early with a Gillette double edge safety razor. This advert is in French, probably from the early 50s, no much more information about it, except that is made me laugh when I saw it.
