What is an aftershave?

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

An aftershave is a lotion, gel, balm, or liquid used by men after finished shaving their face. It usually contains an antiseptic agent such as alcohol to prevent infection from cuts as well as razor burns, a perfume to enhance scent, and a moisturiser to soften the skin. There are also some alcohol-based, fragrance-free astringent that can be used as aftershave. It has been proven that the alcohol from the aftershave closes pores in the skin and prevents irritation known as razor burns.

Pocter & Gamble Co. CEO get $3.5M bonus for Gillette

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Pocter & Gamble Co. gave its top executive a very “special” bonus worth $3.5 million for his “strategic vision” in the acquisition and integration of Boston’s Gillette Co. The Cincinnati-based company made the “special equity award” in the form of restricted stock, to Chairman and Chief Executive A.G. Lafley on Feb. 10, according to a regulatory filing yesterday.

The acquisition was the largest and most successful in the company’s history” said P&G, which purchased razor-maker Gillette in 2005 for $54 billion.

P&G, which recently cut its profit and sales forecast, waited until now to grant the bonus to make sure that savings goals tied to the Gillette takeover had been reached, company spokesman Paul Fox said. He said the bonus was “not unusual”. P&G’s finance chief, Clayton C. Daley Jr., got a $1.5 million special equity award for his “integral role in the valuation, negotiation and acquisition” of Gillette, according to an Aug. 12 regulatory filing.

$3.5 million

Earlier that month, P&G said it would cut 215 jobs at its Gillette South Boston plant by mid-2013 and close a Devens warehouse staffed by about 400 contractors. Former Gillette CEO James Kilts drew heavy fire over the $165 million payout he got for selling the Hub manufacturing icon.

In these times of crisis, it’s hard to read such bonuses when jobs have been cut.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

I approached Sweeney Todd with trepidation, accepting been underwhelmed with most of Tim Burton’s contempo achievement and every screen musical of the decade. The biggest problem I have with Burton’s films is that his screenplays rarely manage to pull their disparate elements into a acceptable whole. Here, adapting the actual to his own sensibilities and abridgement the comedy by an hour, he adheres carefully to Sondheim’s book, consistent in the most dramatically acceptable film Burton has ever made.

Sweeney Todd / Johnny Depp

Sweeney Todd / Johnny Depp

I admired the adjustment of the off-off Broadway Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but have been left underwhelmed by all the recent big budget film musicals, so I’m glad to say that Sweeney Todd, wipes the floor with every major screen musical of the last decade, including the agreeable if over continued Hairspray. Most surprising is how shockingly gruesome the the film becomes in the second half. The abandon violence escalates towards the end leading towards a climax that is exhilarating, heartbreaking and satisfyingly bleak.

Sondheim’s score is a joy to listen to from beginning to end, its dark romanticism sometimes reminding me of Bernhard Herrmann, perfectly fitting what is both a musical and a horror film in equal measures. Depp and Bonham Carter are both excellent and their performances that I never quite lost sympathy with them in their descent into madness, blood lust and cannibalism.

Musical haters may not be converted as 75% percent of the dialogue is sung, but this absolutely dispatches any angle of arid sentimentally the genre is generally associated with.
