Best electric shaving practices

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Electric shaving is divided into a few processes to insure the best results. The preparation is one of the most important part, especially for people with sensitive skin. Dry electric shavers require the hairs to be dry and stiff before the shaving starts, the complete opposite of the traditional shaving, where the hairs and the skin need to be highly moisterised. The dryer are the hairs, the easier to shear them one they get inside the head of the shaver.

Therefore, you should never start by washing your face or wetting the beard with water. Instead, you might want to prepare your beard with a pre-shave lotion especially designed for electric shavers, which dry up the oils and moisture on your skin and make the whiskers stand straight up. These pre-shave lotions are often alcohol based.

Discovering electric shavers

Foils shaver

Foils shaver

Electric shavers work differently from traditional razors, they shear the whishers, the hair enters the perforated foils or metal heads of the shavers and is cut by the moving blades inside the heads. Most electric shavers are dry shavers, as they don’t require the user to apply shaving gel or water. It exists some wet and dry electric shavers.

There are many benefits to perform dry electric shaving and it is easier of use and there are less chance of cuts and scrapes. It is debatable as to whether wet blade shaving or electric shaving is faster, but some men find that the electric shaver is less messy and more convenient, particularly if they are after a quick shave (like most travellers).

The first-time electric shaver users, such as blade razor’s switching to electric, have to be patient and give their face 2 to 3 weeks for the sking to adjust to the electric shaving. It is no recommanded to swing between blade shaving and electric shaving as the skin will not adapt itself to both shaving techniques. The first few shaves will be far from perfect, but try again and insist on using the electric shaver, as your face will get habituated to this method. During the trial and error process of finding the right shaver, remember that many brands of electric shavers have money back guarantees. Be sure to check the guarantee for the shaver you purchase and plan accordingly.

rotary shavers

rotary shavers

There are 2 types of electric shavers, the foil shavers and the rotary shavers, trying both type will help you to determine the one for you. Foil shavers use an oscillating motion, going back and forth, to cut hairs through a foil, also known as a screen. The blades in a foil shaver are positioned in line and they may contain between 1 and 4 rows of blades. Single foil shavers have one cutter covered by one foil. These are ideal for men who are just starting to shave or those with slow beard growth. Double foil shavers have two cutters covered by two foils, triple foil shavers have three cutters covered by three foils, and so forth. Rotary shavers use a cutting system based upon circular blades that rotate under a slotted head or heads. They may contain between 1 and 3 rotating blades and heads, and the heads may be designed to swivel with the contours of your face.

Early Gillette razors

Gillette Company

Gillette Company

Gillette, originally owned by The Gillette Company, is a leading global supplier of products under various brands, which was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 2005. The Gillette Company was founded in 1901 by King C. Gillette, and was based in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Gillette created a lot of revolutionnary products through its history, we will check some of the early products.

Gillette Super Speed

Gillette Super Speed

The Gillette Super Speed razor became popular among those who used safety razors. This model was designed as a TTO razor, TTO meaning ‘Twist to Open’ (as the Gillette Aristocrat), characterised as a set of butterfly doors on the top and a knob on the bottom that opens them. The Super Speed was manufactured from 1940 to 1970. The German company Merkur Solingen, still produces a similar razor, the Merkur Vision 2000. The Super Speed is considered to be Gillette’s crowning achievement, over the years, many models inheritated its design (you can find them on Ebay for instance).

Gillette Trac II

Gillette Trac II

Debuting in 1971, the Trac II was the world’s first two-blade razor. Using the hysteresis effect, Gillette claimed that the second blade cut the number of strokes required in half compared to previous razors, reducing skin irritation. A new model followed, the Trac II Plus is the same as the original, with the adding of a lubricating strip at the top of the blade. This veteran razors are difficult to find, but are still sold.

In 1977, Gillette introduced the Atra, the first razor to feature a pivoting head enabling the blades to “stay on your beard longer for extra closeness“. The pivoting made it easier for men to shave their necks, and also became very popular with women. The Atra Plus was the first razor to add a lubricating strip, dubbed Lubra-Soft strip, softening hairs and acting as a sort of a low-tech aftershave.

Gillette Sensor

Gillette Sensor

Gillette Sensor debuted in 1990 and was the first razor with spring-loaded blades, helping to prevent cuts and allowing for a closer shave. Although this reduces control over the blades by the user, it also reduces the risk of cutting oneself. In 1995, Gillette improved the Sensor and released the Sensor Excel. The Sensor Excel is almost identical to the Sensor, but features “Microfins,” a piece of rubber with slits at the top. Gillette claims that the Microfins help to raise facial hair making for a closer shave.
